What does the HSE scale measure?

What aspects of work and well-being is the HSE scale related to?

HSE Stress Factor What this measures
Role How clear job roles are, whether there are conflicting aspects of the job role
Peer Support The level of support from peers and immediate colleagues
Relationships Whether there is conflict; whether the employee has experienced bullying or harassment at work
Managerial Support The level of support from managers and the organisation
Demands The level of workload pressures and whether these are manageable
Control Basic aspects of control e.g. pace of work, breaks
Change The impact of change; whether change is managed and communicated effectively

Notes: Factor scores are derived from answers to a number of related questions asked in the QoWL Survey. The Stress factors come from the UK Health & Safety Executive’s Work-Related Stress Indicator Scale (HSE, 2004)
